James Gunn Addresses Amanda Waller Spinoff Status Amid Cancelation Fears (2024)

Waller is still on the way. Amid fears from the DC fandom that the Amanda Waller-centered series has been scrapped, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that the project is still in active development.

Responding to a fan on the social media platform Bluesky (via X), Gunn shared that Waller was still in active development despite the project not having been mentioned in any recent interviews given by the DC Studios head. "It is yes," Gunn simply wrote. The update comes almost nine months after the previous one Gunn had offered up on Instagram. "Waller’s still happening & [writers] Jeremy & Christal are hard at work writing great stuff, but the schedule was impacted by the strikes so Waller will come after [Peacemaker Season 2] in the larger order of things," the DC head shared in March 2024.

Waller was part of Gunn's initial DCU slate announcement in January 2023. Viola Davis will reprise her role from the DC Extended Universe as Amanda Waller, making her one of the few actors to be brought back in the same role for the DCU. Her first appearance in the DCU will be in the adult animated series Creature Commandos, which is set after the events of Peacemaker Season 1 (which is almost 100% canon in the new universe).

Who Else Is Starring in Waller?

At the time of writing, Steve Agee, who portrays A.R.G.U.S. agent John Economos in the DCEU and DCU, is the only other confirmed cast member for Waller. Earlier this year there was a rumor stating that Corey Hawkins (Kong: Skull Island, The Walking Dead) had joined the spinoff series in the role of A.R.G.U.S. Agent, Dale Gunn. However, Gunn quickly debunked the casting rumor, writing on Threads, "Scripts aren't finished. Haven't started the casting process. (So no [it's not true])."

With Peacemaker Season 2 not set to premiere until August 2025, after the release of Superman, fans may be waiting a while for Waller. The next two DCU productions set to get underway are the HBO series Lanterns and the theatrical film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in January 2025, with both slated to debut in mid-2026. Based on these timelines, Waller might not premiere until late 2026/early 2027 and that is only if the series begins production next year.

The DCU kicks off on Dec. 5 with the two-episode premiere of Creature Commandos. Left with her hands tied operationally, Amanda Waller is no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions, leading her to put together the titular team of monsters (and Rick Flag Sr.).

Frank Grillo leads the cast as Rick Flag Sr., with Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface, and Anya Chalotra as Circe, among others.

Waller does not yet have a release date.
