In Jujutsu Kaisen, sorcerers are trained to fight cursed spirits and protect humanity, and popular characters like Yuji Itadori and Satoru Gojo are well-known for their immense powers. Kokichi Muta was a lesser known character who played an important role in the Shibuya Incident Arc. The second-year Kyoto Jujutsu High student had a complicated history that gave him unique powers despite his weak appearance.

Much of Kokichi's strength came from both the Heavenly Restriction he was afflicted with at birth and his mastery of Puppet Manipulation. Because of this, Kokichi was actually one of the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, which may come as a surprise to those who underestimated his Ultimate Mechamaru puppet.

Kokichi's Human Body was Fragile

Kokichi's body is actually so weak and sickly that he's unable to go Kyoto Jujutsu High in person. Instead, Kokichi attends via proxy by inhabiting his Ultimate Mechamaru puppet, which is where most of his power lies.

Kokichi's entire body is covered in scars, with wrinkled skin that is often covered up with bandages. His right forearm is missing, and neither of his legs are strong enough for him to walk. Kokichi's body is also not able to tolerate sunshine or moonlight, and he suffers from chronic pain all over. Because of his inability to move, Kokichi would sit in a bathtub deep in a cave attached to several tubes living a lonely life as a recluse.

Because of his tragic and miserable existence, Kokichi dreamed of nothing more than having a healthy body and being able to live a normal life. He grew to resent the cursed energy that plagued his body, even though it served as the source of his power and allowed him to use the strong cursed technique that made him a Semi-Grade 1 sorcerer.

Kokichi's Strength Came from a Heavenly Restriction

Kokichi was one of very few sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen's story afflicted with a Heavenly Restriction, a binding put on a sorcerer when they are born. This greatly augmented his cursed energy but came at the price of putting limitations on his physical body. These limitations were ultimately one of the reasons Kokichi grew to resent his situation; his body was severely restricted in exchange for high amounts of cursed energy, essentially giving him no freedom to be anything but a strong sorcerer.

Because of his terrible Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi had enough cursed energy to cover the entire nation of Japan. His ability to store his cursed energy and channel it allowed him to reach moments in the series where his energy output was at one of the highest grades possible on Jujutsu Kaisen's power scale, albeit only temporarily.

Kokichi's Puppet Manipulation Could Control Cursed Corpses

Kokichi's Puppet Manipulation is far from Jujutsu Kaisen's most powerful cursed technique, but it was a unique ability that allowed him to remotely control cursed corpses that served as his puppets. He could control them over a wide range thanks to his high amounts of cursed energy, and his puppets often had an arsenal of abilities that helped him in the heat of battle, even if his physical body was far away and not fit for fighting.

Kokichi used Ultimate Mechamaru, a cursed corpse, to attend Kyoto Jujutsu High. Mechamaru was a mechanical puppet that had a human-like appearance, made to fit in with the other students at Kokichi's school. Mechamaru even wore the school uniform, and Kokichi's classmates referred to him as Mechamaru instead of by his actual name.

Kokichi often used Ultimate Mechamaru when on missions, but he could actually control several puppets at the same time. This allowed him to steal information, making him the perfect mole for Mahito. The evil cursed spirit promised to give Kokichi a healthy body in exchange for his intel. Kokichi knew working with Mahito was not the noble choice, but he was ultimately driven by his desire to have a normal life. One of the conditions of his work for Mahito was for the cursed spirit and his allies to not harm anyone from Kokichi's school, showing that although he made a selfish deal with the enemy, his intentions were noble, albeit misguided.

Mechamaru's Techniques Gave Kokichi Powerful Offensive Abilities

When controlling Mechamaru, Kokichi unlocked powerful offensive abilities that his weak human body would otherwise not be capable of handling. The cursed corpse came equipped with a variety of weapons, often transforming its arms into different weapons that expanded the options Kokichi had to dominate the battlefield.

Mechamaru's Sword Option Technique shifted his forearms into different blades, which could be combined with an Ultra Spin Technique to rapidly spin the swords, allowing them to drill into just about anything with ease. Mechamaru's arms also were able to transform defensively, with protective spikes serving as a shield as well as jet boosters that could propel Mechmaru forward with powerful momentum.

Mechamaru's signature attack was his Ultra Cannon, which allowed it to shoot a strong plast of cursed energy from its palms. Mecahmaru also had a gun barrel hidden inside its mouth, which Kokichi often used to output insane levels of cursed energy as his finishing move in battle.

Ultimate Mechamaru's Absolute Mode Further Heightened Kokichi's Power

Living a lifetime in isolation gave Kokichi plenty of time to dream of the day he'd have a powerful body, and despite his Heavenly Restriction, he actually was able to build a giant armored version of Mechamaru during his time in isolation. This massive version of the cursed corpse was referred to as Ultimate Mechamaru - Mode: Absolute, and it was a giant, armored puppet complete with a co*ckpit that Kokichi would be able to pilot if he were to have a body fit enough for the task.

Mode: Absolute gave Kokichi an even stronger version of Mechamaru, with the enhanced armor of the upgraded mech proving to be much more protective than the normal Mechamaru. Mode: Absolute also provided greatly enhanced offensive abilities that allowed Kokichi to output special grade levels of his cursed energy reserves. The pilotable mech version of Mechamaru came with a supercharged version of the Ultra Cannon, capable of expending a year's worth of cursed energy in a single beam, a two-handed Miracle Cannon that expelled two years' of cursed energy, and a powerful charge that generated a massive five years' worth of cursed energy.

Kokichi's Pact with Mahito Ultimately Led to His Downfall

Kokichi's Binding Vow with Mahito eventually led to his body being healed by the cursed spirit, which allowed him the chance to pilot Ultimate Mechamaru - Mode: Absolute in one of Jujutsu Kaisen's most thrilling battles so far. It was amazing to see Kokichi finally realize his dreams, and he was quick to demonstrate that he was ultimately a good guy, despite working with one of the series' most evil villains to achieve his goals.

The ensuing battle between Kokichi and Mahito saw the cursed spirit take some nasty punches, but just as Kokichi believed he would emerge victorious, Mahito brought out his powerful Domain Expansion and turned the tides in his favor. Eventually, Mahito worked his way into the co*ckpit of Mechamaru, overpowering Kokichi and killing him in one of Jujutsu Kaisen's saddest deaths.

In the end, it's impossible to know just how strong Kokichi would have been able to grow had he won the battle against Mahito. The fight to the death between the two proved that Kokichi would have been a near-unstoppable force among Jujutsu Kaisen's sorcerers if he had more time to hone his skills alongside his new healthy body. Unfortunately, his desire to have that body eclipsed his ability to think rationally, and this led him to make a pact that ultimately led to his death.
